The Futa-Ai Selvedge Jean from Studio D'Artisan is one of the most unique denim releases we've encountered. Built around a centuries-old Japanese dyeing tradition, the denim is dyed using the rare Futa-Ai ("Two Indigo") technique, a combination of Tokushima natural indigo and madder root extracts that dates back to Japan's Heian period (794–1185). Historically reserved for nobility and high-ranking officials, the resulting color carries a remarkable depth that shifts between rich indigo, violet, and earthy tones depending on the light.
The 16oz selvedge denim is woven on vintage shuttle looms with an extra-slubby, loosely textured surface that highlights the complexity of the natural dyes. As the denim ages, the combination of the uneven texture and traditional dyeing process creates a fading pattern unlike conventional rope-dyed indigo denim.
Cut in Studio D'Artisan's classic regular straight fit, the silhouette features a comfortable medium rise with room through the top block and a clean straight leg. Rinsed to remove shrinkage and finished with the exceptional construction details the brand is known for, this is a truly special pair of jeans that showcases the artistry and heritage behind Japanese denim.
