Altamont was meant to close out the Rolling Stones’ 1969 American tour in triumph. Instead, the free concert became one of the darkest moments in rock history. The Hells Angels had been brought in as security, and 18 year old Meredith Hunter was killed during the Stones’ set on December 6, 1969.
The Maysles brothers’ documentary Gimme Shelter captured the violence and its aftermath. Altamont has since come to stand for the moment the optimism of the 1960s met a much harder reality. TSPTR’s tee points to that history without pretending it was just another great concert.
