In the late 1970s, adult film star John Holmes opened American Sound Recording Studio in West Hollywood, hoping music might become his next act. The studio did not last long, but it left a trace on the record: some sessions for Jerry Garcia’s 1978 solo album Cats Under the Stars took place there.
It is a very Los Angeles story. A famous face tries to reinvent himself, a recording studio briefly comes to life, and decades later its name turns up in the credits of a great record. TSPTR brings that forgotten piece of music history back into view.
