Back after a lengthy absence, Studio D’Artisan’s Amami Dorozome series returns in deep, earthy shades that could only come from trees, mud, iron, and a great deal of patience.
The jacket begins as ecru 17oz Bushu sashiko, a heavyweight Japanese cloth known for its strength, warmth, and wonderfully uneven texture. It then travels more than 1,000 kilometers to Amami Oshima, where each finished garment is dyed individually by the small number of shokunin who continue to practice the island’s traditional dorozome process.
Natural dye extracted from the native Techi tree is combined with iron-rich mud formed from geological layers more than 1.5 million years old. Repeated trips through the dye and mud baths produce complex shades of brown and black that artificial dyes cannot reproduce. No two jackets are identical. Every variation is a record of the hands, materials, and landscape involved in making it.
