Frank Zappa called his home recording studio the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen. The name sounds like a place where you might find a cake in the oven. You were more likely to find Zappa testing a new sound.
The joke had a life beyond the studio. It appeared in his song “Muffin Man” and later in Joe’s Garage, where the story’s musician ends up working at the Utility Muffin Research Kitchen decorating muffins. TSPTR’s tee picks up that wonderfully absurd piece of Zappa’s world.
